Preservatives in Skincare that are Healthy

Most of the following can have shortcoming from lack of research.  Although natural and around for many years, many studies done in vitro (in test tubes, or out of the body) show that these preservatives are effective.  However, studies with skincare products are still not as conclusive. Many can be effective but need other more harmful preservatives to give full effectiveness.  While this may seem as not the perfect solution, these ingredients can reduce the amount of the harmful ingredients by 80 - 90%.

The Best Skincare Preservative Ingredients That are Healthy

Citric Acid -  Antioxidant, Antibacterial, prevents rancidity, very mild unless used at very high dose.
Benzylalcohol - Synthetic but is antiviral, antibacteria and anti fungal and also helps acne.

Healthy Preservatives for Skincare, but they Can Cause Irritation

Benzoin Powder - Slows bacteria growth, can be a skin irritant

Cinnamaldehyde -Natural from Cinnamon oil and bark, it is anti bacterial, anti fungal, and an antioxidant.  It can be a skin irritant.
Hydrastis Canadensis ( Goldenseal ) - Also known as Tumeric or Yellow Root, can irritate skin. We almost didn't want to include Goldenseal since it has no proof to work topically, but we include it to relay the information of how it works orally as an antibacterial and antiviral ingredient, not topically.
Ethylenediamine - Fungicide, rarely found in products, can cause allergen contact dermititis.
Oregano Essential Oil  - Kills mold, fungi and bacteria, can cause allergic reaction due to limonene in it.
