Preservatives That are Toxic in Skincare

The best way to preserve your products would be to refrigerate them, however the industry knows that is not reliable with the consumer.  Unfortunately, each preservative has a problem associated with it, due to price, cancer risk, allergic reaction, or lack of research.  Here is a rundown of preservative ingredients for cosmetics and skincare that are not recommended and are dangerous:

Benzalkonium Chloride ( BAC ) - Antibacterial, belonging to a germacide called Quats , can cause asthma, chronic dermatitis and other immune system disorders. Safe if used short term, but dangerous at low levels over long time.
Benzethonium Chloride - Antibacterial, belonging to a germacide called Quats like BAC, can cause asthma, chronic dermatitis and other immune system disorders. Safe if used short term, but dangerous at low levels over long time.
Clioquinol - Antifungal and AntiProtozoal, can inhibit certain enzymes related to DNA replication.
Dimethylol dimethyl hydantoin (DMDM hydantoin) - Kills Bacteria, fungus, viruses, link to cancer.
Diazolidinyl Urea - Antibacterial and antifungal by releasing formaldehyde, which has a link to cancer.
Euxyl K400 - Antibacterial, can cause allergic contact dermitis, can be spread from hand to hand contact.
Formaldehyde - Used prior to 1930's instead of paraben, it has a link to causing cancer.
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) or Citrus paridisi -  Many people may find it hard to believe we put GSE on our dangerous list since it is natural.  Grapefruit Seed Extract inhibits CYP3A4, which is an enzyme that removes toxins and drugs from the body. Watch out for this one as well because some manufacturers are "fortifying" the GSE with triclosan, benzalkonium chloride, metyl p-hydroxybenzoate, benzethonium chloride, all synthetic chemicals.
Imidazolidinyl Urea - Antibacterial by releasing formaldehyde, which has a link to cancer.  No anti fungal properties.
Iodine - Antibacterial - skin irritant, can cause allergic reaction, dangerous to aquatic life, doesn't break down.
Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate ( IPBC ) -  kills mold and Antibacterial, linked to gastrointestinal and liver toxins, birth defects, infertility in women.
Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile MDBGN -  Antibacterial, causes allergic contact dermitis.
Methylisothiazolinone - Antibacterial, can cause nerve damage in low dosage over time, skin cell death.
Parabens -  Antibacterial and anti fungal, can disrupt endocrine system and cause breast cancer, testicular cancer, lower sperm count.
Quaternium-15 - Antibacterial by releasing formaldehyde, which has a link to cancer.
Thiomersal -  Antibacterial, mercury based found in eye creams and mascara.
Triclosan - Antibacterial, can pass through the skin and cause endocrine disruption.  Doesn't break down, dangerous to aquatic life.
