The Different Reasons Your Skin Gets Damaged

Damage from the environment can come from UV rays, air pollution, smoke, heavy metals, contact with chemicals and radiation.

Sunburns, or erythema, is the effects of exposure to excess amount of UV rays.  Sunburns and tans break down the skin cells leading to age spots and loss of elasticity.  Skin becomes dry, leather feeling and the loss of elasticity causes wrinkles.

Photo sensitivity is how exposure UV rays can cause photo aging with skin abnormalities.  Minor problems can start with an actinic keratosis or solar keratosis, and collagen degradation, metalloproteinases.  Further, it can mutate into a basal cell or Squamous cell cancer, further becoming a malignant melanoma.

Free radical damage is when environmental damage mutates skin cells.  These mutations can render the skin cell ineffective and lead to sun spots, hyper pigmentation and cancer. This happens when oxygen molecules are unpaired giving an oxidative damage.

DNA mutations can occur when skin is exposed to environmental pollutants or UV rays.

Treatment for environmental Damage to Skin

Antioxidants are the best way to prevent and reverse the effects of skin damage. Antioxidants give photo- protection as well as prevention to DNA mutations, and protection to skin proteins and cell membranes due to oxidation.
